Banks

TSB Bank

164 Bath Rd, Cheltenham GL53 7NF, UK – 01242 584825

I have several banks, this is by far the most helpful, friendly and knowledgeable

HSBC

109 Bath Rd, Cheltenham GL53 7RA, UK – 0345 740 4404

Nice large bank / office. The lack of parking is a pain. I wish HSBC had more of of town places like before. Having to pay for parking in town or find parking a long walk away is .. well inconvenient. Especially if you carry cash.... Might move to other banks with more out of town locations.

A few parking spaces for customers at the rear are very welcome.

Natwest

151 Bath Rd, Gloucestershire, Cheltenham GL53 7LT, UK – 0345 788 8444

A little slow getting a new account set up, it seems all banks want you to go online now

Always found this branch very helpful

Building Societies

Yorkshire Building Society

Just about to make my first visit to Cheltenham Branch after my move from Southampton.

Good bank!

Halifax

8 Winchcombe St, Cheltenham GL52 2LW, UK – 0345 600 3934

Excellent staff always friendly & helpful. Always clean & tidy. Only problem is there can be long queues altho not always & cash machines can be grubby. Since posting this review have noticed cash machines much cleaner.

very friendly.. old fashioned one on one service

Local Chambers of Commerce for GL52 9HN. These can be an extraordinarily effective way of getting into the business community and / or getting things done. Equally they can be entirely useless depending on the chair. If they have networking events associated with them definitely go, and keep going, if you have a business that need local support. What you put in is exactly what you get out. Below is the national site. Watch this slot - it might improve!
Cheltenham Town Hall

Imperial Square, Cheltenham GL50 1QA, UK – 0844 576 2210

Glorious building in a glorious Spa town. They have all kinds of entertainment here from live music, record fair's, comedians, etc etc. (I won't make a list as they have a website you can check out.) The building was one of only 2 or 3 places you could taste the glorious Spa water that Cheltenham was famous for many years ago. (I think it tastes terrible). There is a bar room in here which is also used for some events like the record fairs they hold, and the main room with the stage in- for the acts to perform. People say the acoustics in this room are not very good for live bands. Well considering when the place was built, and the fact these bands are playing live it is not going to be like sitting in a studio listening to a play-back. The staff are all friendly and seem to enjoy their work, which rubs off on the general feel of the place. There is also the good Imperial Gardens behind the building which is nice to relax in on a hot summer day.

Very. nice and nice place, great atmosphere of this place that you feel all the time being there. Just something wonderful. You must visit this place to fully feel the atmosphere of this amazing place on your own skin. This is a unique repair site worth recommending.

Oriel Villas Dental Surgery - Dentist Cheltenham

1 Oriel Rd, Cheltenham GL50 1XN, UK – 01242 523531

So glad to FINALLY find a decent dentist in Cheltenham. Friendly helpful reception, good communicative dentists, affordable. Everything you need. Only dentist I’d reccomend in Cheltenham.

The dentist was so lovely and comforting and just reassuring the whole time which made me feel differently about going back to the dentist. I recommend them they were efficient and caring and just great overall. I have been very happy with them!

Cheltenham House Dental Practice

30 Winchcombe St, Cheltenham GL52 2LZ, UK – 01242 513146

i have been here for 3 years, had lovely service throughout.Prices have been good and i like that they dont enforce check ups every 6 months if they dont need to, it feels less like they're trying to get money out of you. which is a worry at some dentists. i do wish they would put some interesting art on the ceiling for your eyes to wonder, during a filling.

Recently moved to Cheltenham and needed a dentist for my wife and I as we believe in preventive dentistry for good oral health. Checked around the area and decided on this practice. The best decision we could have made. Two appointments were made for my wife and I to have one after the other. Our dentist is called Alex and he was brilliant, one of the best dentists I have had over my life time and I am 64. Brilliant patient manner which put me totally at ease straight away. Unhurried attitude to check my teeth properly and ask relevant questions regarding general and oral health, he was wonderful, and his assistant male nurse who was very attentive as well. My wife was next after me and she had the same excellent treatment Alex putting her at ease and explaining everything as well... she came out with a smile on her face saying what a lovely dental appointment that was as he was so gentle and caring. I can only recommend this practice to anyone who needs a good dentist with a marvellous patient attitude and excellent customer service with the receptionists as well.

Our dentist Claudia is lovely, and her and the dental nurse are great with our 2 year old son too! The appointments never feel rushed, I always feel well looked after. I've found the receptionists helpful and friendly, both on the phone and in person. Very pleased we found mydentist!

Saw Dr. Hugo who has provided my husband and myself with new false teeth (( top and bottom)) his meticulous attention to detail is beyond call duty. Thoroughly recommend this dentist.

Underwood Surgery

Underwood Surgery, 139 St George's Rd, Cheltenham GL50 3EQ, UK – 01242 580644

Good doctors! Short waiting times! Just wish there was more parking πŸ˜‚

My family and I have been patients at Underwood Surgery for nearly ten years. It has always delivered a good service with very short waits for my young children and a choice of familiar, friendly doctors. In the last couple of years I have noticed we need to wait longer for appointments but I would put this down to cuts from the Conservative government rather than the surgery itself.

NHS Direct is now NHS 24. Just dial 111 to speak to a professional or click the link below for there self help website. Lots of really useful info but keep clear of heart surgery! If in doubt ask your GP or call 111. Good luck.

Cheltenham General Hospital

Sandford Rd, Cheltenham GL53 7AN, UK – 0300 422 2222

My father was admitted as an emergency on Good Friday, and ended up on Lilleybrook ward. I cannot fault his care, it was exceptional. All the staff involved were so caring, kind and conscientious in the face of huge pressure, and I could never thank them enough for all they did for him and us. Having experienced much lower standards where he lived before, all staff should be proud of the extremely high standard of care they achieve in Cheltenham.

In the last 5 years I have had quiet a few visits to the Hospital. On every visit but one I have had great service. The last time was earlier this year when I had to have a scan in one of those Tardis machines. It might be ECG or something like that. I showed up 5 minutes before I was due and guess what? I sat in the waiting room for..... Yes you got it, 5 minutes. Now that is service. I had a five minute chat with a nurse who injected me with a dye and then twenty minutes later I was in the machine, scanned and on my home within another ten mins. For anyone wondering the scanner is good fun. Seriously, it's nothing to worry about. I felt like I was staring in an episode of Dr. Who. Maybe I was lucky being seen so quickly as it was in January when we had all the snow. Maybe some people cancelled or something. But I was well pleased with the speed of everything. Another visit was for a broken wrist which I obtained in Liverpool. I waited about 15 mins. that time and was seen by a doctor, x-rayed, back to the doctor again and given a prescription; then off to collect my drugs from their pharmacy. That visit lasted about 90 mins. in all. Everyone I spoke to was great, friendly, helpful and not condescending in any way. The time I was admitted to have a stent put in was fine. I arrived, had to wait a while (about 50 minutes) as there was a problem of some sort. Anyway, I was wheeled into the laboratory (officially the operating theater), where the surgeon explained everything. I was offered a jab to put me to sleep (no, not like in a vet's place) which I declined and then watched on a T.V screen as the little thing was pushed through my groin into a vein somewhere inside me. I did have a local anesthetic first. I was wheeled out and left to lie around in the room I came from with about 7 other people there. Of course I was very pleased there was a nurse there as my newly acquired wound opened and started pumping blood all over me. She sorted it within a minute and all was fine. I was then wheeled to a ward for the night and went to sleep perfectly happy with yet another good visit to this place almost over. I woke up, had a chat with the nice chap in the other bed and a nurse came in. I was telling the old guy about something from years ago and to cut a longer story short the nurse told the sister that I had wished cancer on her. I was so unpopular from that point on I was glad to be away. I walked home just to get out. The whole of my visit was good. No complaints about this place at all. It was just some stupid young girl playing a daft game that spoiled it a teeny bit. All the other times it was great. Having the cast taken off my arm/wrist. Going for the test results from my scan was great as well. The doctors these days seem able to have a laugh with you rather than being those poker faced people from years ago. Added bonus... My scan was negative.

Find Local Churches & Places of Worship

Trinity Cheltenham

100-102 Winchcombe St, Cheltenham GL52 2NW, UK – 01242 808780

A wonderful, life affirming community worshiping in a modern & relaxed way. Very welcoming with a huge amount of activities.

Really not my cup of tea, but if you are looking for a modern Charismatic church with a really effective ministry tons of community work and solid Evangelical principles with a "megachurch" vibe and are under 60 this may be the church for you. Pneumatic dynamic and a roaring success but I'm just too staid I fear!

St Marys Church

Mill St, Prestbury, Cheltenham GL52 3BQ, UK – 01242 244373

Beautiful church, well worth a visit.

Lovely, welcoming church. I take my daughter to celebrate on Sundays at 9:30 where the children have instruments to be able to join in with the singing and I often take her in her pushchair, wheelchair accessible too.

Christ Church Cheltenham

Malvern Rd, Cheltenham GL50 2JH, UK – 01242 578163

A warm and friendly welcome. Didn't get on too well with the pews, rather uncomfortable.

Lovely church. Came for a confirmation for my god daughter and thoroughly enjoyed the day

Find Recycling Centres

Swindon Road Recycling Centre

Swindon Rd, Cheltenham GL51 9JZ, UK – 01242 262626

The go to place for getting rid of all that junk. Note that vans aren't allowed. The waste skips are laid out on the outside of a circular driveway, and are labelled electrical, paper, cardboard wood metal etc. Some hazardous wastes and building materials can't be left here, but everything else can including garden waste and household appliances. Usually clean and tidy and staff helpful.

It is relatively small and can get busy at times. The staff are friendly and typically don't get in your way or pass judgement on whatever you are chucking.

Wingmoor Farm Household Recycling Centre

Lowdilow Ln, Cheltenham GL52 7RS, UK – 0845 602 9344

Spacious and well labelled recycling centre. Just edited the location as Google Maps was showing the incorrect entrance. You access the site West of the humpback bridge/train tracks.

Helpful friendly staff, even on a cold wet dark autumn evening.

Local Restaurants & Places to Eat around Woodmancote

Bhoomi

52 Suffolk Rd, Cheltenham GL50 2AQ, UK – 01242 222010

Fantastic place. Staff are lovely. We went for my birthday and did the tasting menu. We were able to do one meat and one vegetarian menu and the wine pairing. Couldn't fault the food, service or drinks. Very tasty, flavoursome and an amazing experience.

Excellent high end Indian food. Portions a little on the small side, but not stingy. Consider giving the poppadoms a miss as a) they are expensive and b) in an attempt to give them a high end look, the pickles are too small. The beef and aubergine starter is lovely. They serve draft Kingfisher at a reasonable price. Service is good and the surroundings well designed.

Le Champignon Sauvage

24-28 Suffolk Rd, Cheltenham GL50 2AQ, UK – 01242 573449

Just marvellous from the staff greeting and serving on arrival to the cheeseboard and petit fours at the end. Imaginative, beautifully presented flavour combinations. Special mention to the Thai green curry ice cream and the squid ink sauce. Simply gorgeous!

The food was very good but I would have never guessed this is a 2 star Michelin restaurant and it certainly was miles away from my previous experience at 1 star Michelin restaurants. This said, we did take advantage of the extremely good value for money lunch menu and had a fantastic time. Good food but customer service very poor for this level of restaurant. I really struggled to make a reservation and was initially told the restaurant was fully booked so was very surprised to see more than half the tables empty on arrival. Staff are very friendly but lack customers service training. Nothing to keep our white wine cool on a hot day and I was poured a full glass of wine to taste, the wine, very strange. The decor feels old and tired and although I appreciated the laid back atmosphere the place looks like a pub from outside, extremely simple inside and the toilets look like you got lost in an Ibis hotel. No nice touches like Aessop soap, instead cheap soap coming out of a plastic refill and tic tac served in a shot glass. I highly recommend coming here to take advantage of the Mon-Fri lunch menu but quite frankly not sure why this restaurant has made Michelin star (even one). Had I come on a weekend at full price I would have been disappointed and if I had never been to a Michelin Star restaurant this experience would have contributed very little for me to seek out further Michelin rated restaurant. I revisited the restaurant recently again. This time I wasn't so focused on the fact it's a Michelin star restaurant. I just focused on the food which was top notch and had a lovely time. The atmosphere is definitely a little odd. Very quiet as never fully booked and no music but food won't let this place down so if you don't judge them on their Michelin stars you won't be let down. You will like this restaurant if you prefer more laid back, not snobbish service and atmosphere and if you don't compare to other Michelin star restaurants you may have been to OR if you haven't decided to come here for your first Michelin star experience and if you don't mind there is no music in background.

Petit Coco Bistro

2 Bath St, Cheltenham GL50 1YE, UK – 01242 257343

I think this is still the smallest restaurant in Cheltenham but that just means you need to book early. The service is excellent but this restaurant is all about the food. It's amazing French cuisine - nothing overly fancy, just some great traditional dishes cooked to perfection. Eating here feels like being a guest at a country chateau!

small intimate restaurant. We enjoyed every mouthful of all our courses. Definitely recommended with 5 stars

Winton House

11 Warden Hill Rd, Cheltenham GL51 3AU, UK – 01242 511417

My daughter attends Winton House but my eldest went to another local nursery full time for 4 years so I do have something to make a comparison with and can't speak highly enough of Winton House and the staff there. Jo is very approachable and familiar and the staff welcome my daughter with open arms every morning. She hates being left with anyone else but loves arriving at Winton House to start her day which speaks volumes.

My son has been going to Winton House for six months. He absolutely loves it and can't wait to leave home in the morning to get there! It's a lovely environment and the staff appear very friendly and helpful. We chose this day nursery having seen quite a few others in the area and have been very pleased with our choice. We would definitely recommend it.

Primary and Secondary Schools

Grangefield Primary School

Voxwell Ln, Bishops Cleeve, Cheltenham GL52 8GL, UK – 01242 671003

When I children first went to this school I had doubts about its ability to educate however, these have been quelled by the excellent teachers and results they have achieved, whilst teaching my children. Mrs Lewis the Head..and her dedicated team of educators have done an excellent job bringing the best out of my offspring and preparing them for grammer school.

Best primary ever I loved it xx

Pittville School

sorry mr gilpin i love noodles

Pittville is the most successful school in Cheltenham, having undergone an incredible transformation thanks to the dedication and genius of its benevolent headteacher, Richard Gilpin. It will certainly be Outstanding at its next Ofsted and would be my first choice of school in the town nowadays, as it’s gone streets ahead of Bournside and Cleeve.

Airthrie School

Cheltenham GL50 2NY, UK – 01242 512837

This week, with my business Immersive Theatres, I delivered a 4m digital planetarium experience to all 130 students of Airthrie Primary School. From the moment I arrived I was warmly greeted, assisted and made to feel very welcome by the staff and headteacher. Yet the students were the highlight, because, although very excited, they were respectful and well-behaved in the dome. Thank you Airthrie Primary for a very pleasant visit.

Lovely school and what lovely teachers. Highly recommend.
